CONTEXTILE – Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art was created in 2012, the year that Guimarães (Portugal) was European Capital of Culture, and was part of the event’s programme. This is an international biennial whose conceptual matrix is to put textiles inside contemporary art’s context.
CONTEXTILE was born in close connection with this Territory of Textile Culture, the Ave Valley, dialoguing with the textile, artistic and student communities, but also with the people of Guimarães, to build each edition of its artistic programme.
In each edition, CONTEXTILE occupies various cultural facilities and public spaces in Guimarães. Its program includes an international exhibition, guest artists, a guest country, artist residencies and an exhibition dedicated to artistic education, but also cycles of talks, workshops, mediation and the establishment of international cooperation networks.
The biennial has become a recognized international reference in the field of contemporary textile art. It is also a unique cultural and artistic event, making the region the epicenter of a process of interaction and connection between artists, creators, communities, industry and territories.
