Escape the heat and immerse yourself in a stunning fusion of culture, tradition, and innovation at Nana’s Garden, a temporary textile-based art installation by Kira Dominguez Hultgren, presented as part of ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade.
As part of the Nana’s Garden installation, the Textile Society of America invites members and local artisans to come together for a special Meet-up & Hands-on Workshop led by artist/educator and TSA Board Member Kira Dominguez Hultgren.
What to Expect:
- A welcoming space for TSA members and Maryvale artisans to connect over a shared love of textiles
- Hands-on crochet session exploring techniques, traditions, and personal stories
- Seasoned crocheters are encouraged to mentor and guide emerging fiber artists
This is an incredible opportunity to engage with Phoenix’s fiber arts community and experience firsthand how textile traditions shape public art and community storytelling.

¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade is a breathtaking 7′ x 20′ geometric-floral crochet awning, inspired by Mexican “tejidos” (crochet nana squares, lace, and woven fans), provides much-needed shade at Maryvale Park’s baseball field while showcasing the artistry of textile traditions. Nana’s Garden transforms fences into functional, low-cost structures using UV-resistant polyester, industrial-grade plastics, and bioplastics—exploring the intersection of social and environmental justice, sustainability, and cultural heritage.
