Doily Free Zone is a celebration of new work being done by young people working with handmade lace. The theme of this year’s symposium is Inter/Face Inter/Lace and one of the main aims of this symposium is to look at new ways of interpreting and communicating with and about lace.
While the presenters are under the age of 40 the symposium is not intended only for this age group, #DFZ2016 is open to everyone who loves lace and is interested in the future of these techniques. The format of the symposium which includes presentations, workshops and an exhibition, seeks to create a stimulating and nurturing environment to encourage the choice of lace making as a form of creative expression for future generations. The objective is to share and to learn from each other.
This year the symposium will be held in Gandino which is home to a world class collection of lace and other textiles giving the participants the opportunity to experience part of the history of lace making within a very special context. We will also be running two pre-symposium workshops on June 8-9; one about Site-Specific Lace Constructions with Olivia Valentine and one about Cold connections and Clasps for Lace Jewellery with Alicia Jane Boswell.
