Women learn the skill of finessing from an early age. From carefully navigating their career, family life, societal pressures and expectations, and everyday moments of subtle and direct violence, the art of finesse is required to exist in the world as a woman. Similarly, the artists in this exhibition finesse their chosen fibrous mediums to create their intended outcome. Continuing the legacy of women driving the fiber movement, these artists boldly work in mediums once relegated to craft and breathe new life and a sense of urgency into their chosen mediums. With the #MeToo movement taking our country by storm and the threat to women’s bodily autonomy becoming more real every day, being a female artist working in mediums once considered domestic and “lesser” is both an act of defiance and celebration. This exhibition seeks to elevate and give a voice to female artists working in Nebraska, allowing them to share their experiences visually and start conversations that promote positive change.
The Exhibition features work by sixteen female artists that all range in age and experience with their mediums, and will be on display January 3rd-February 29th 2020 in our West Gallery.
