Join curator and TSA member Erica Warren for a virtual walkthrough and discussion of the exhibition Bisa Butler: Portraits, on view at the Art Institute of Chicago through September 6, 2021. A close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition features over twenty kaleidoscopic portrait quilts that unpack history and explore themes such as family, migration, and the promise of youth as well as artistic and intellectual legacies. Butler’s interdisciplinary engagements with textiles, painting, and photography, her allusive use of printed fabrics, and the care she offers her portrait subjects come through in her vibrant and captivating works.
Dr. Erica Warren is associate curator of Textiles at the Art Institute of Chicago. Among her research interests are the city of Chicago’s role in the Good Design exhibitions, the designer, entrepreneur, and weaver Dorothy Liebes, and the unbounded material practices of contemporary artists working with textiles.
