Join the Textile Society of America for a day-long program viewing and studying textiles in the Cultural Center of Detroit, Michigan. The Cultural Center, in the Midtown area of Detroit, is a well-designed cultural campus comprised of several prominent city cultural institutions and two institutions of higher education. The day will begin with a tour of the Ray Zimmerman and Joyce Stuart Fiber Studio at Wayne State University. The group then will walk to the Detroit Institute of Arts for curator-lead presentations by Dr. Nii Quarcoopome, Curator of African Art, and Dr. Katherine Kasdorf, Associate Curator of Asian Art. After viewing selections of the museum’s renown African art collection and visiting the newly-installed Asian Wing, the group will have a guided tour the world-famous Detroit Industry Murals by artist Diego Rivera. Following lunch at the museum, participants will have the option of touring the Fibers Department at College for Creative Studies, which focuses on textile design for industry, or visiting the studio of contemporary Detroit artist Carole Harris.
