The R.L. Shep Symposium is a one-day symposium at LACMA, with multiple speakers on the evolution of ikat pattern design within a cultural context, and its production from the 19th century through today, held in conjunction with the exhibition “Power of Pattern: Central Asian Ikats from the David and Elizabeth Reisbord Collection.” The talks include:
• “Beauty and Purpose: Central Asian Ikat Garments,” Sumru Belger Krody, Senior Curator, The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum (Washington D.C.)
• “Wearing the World: A Look Inside Central Asian Ikat Robes,” Annie Carlano, Senior Curator of Craft, Design, and Fashion, Mint Museum (Charlotte, NC)
• “All of a Piece: Ikat and the Central Asian Aesthetic,” Andrew Hale, Director of Anahita Gallery, Inc. and Anahita International Photography (Sante Fe, NM)
• “Ikat and Politics, Ikat and Creativity: Uzbek Textiles in the Soviet and Post-Soviet Periods,” Irina Bogoslovskaya, Independent Scholar (Samarkand and Tashkent, Uzbekistan)
• “A Collector’s Eye: Conversation with Dr. David Reisbord,” Dr. David Reisbord, Collector, and Clarissa M. Esguerra, Associate Curator of Costume and Textiles, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA)

***PARKING is available in LACMA’s lot at Wilshire & Spaulding, and in the underground parking lot off of 6th Street. $16 all day. There is limited street parking; beware of time limits!
REFRESHMENTS: There will be no formal refreshments for this program, and LACMA’s on-campus coffee places DO NOT OPEN BEFORE 10 a.m.! PLEASE NOTE: The LACMA Café is now closed for the big renovation! There is an airstream trailer with food near Ray’s (the LACMA Restaurant,) and there are 5-6 food trucks on Wilshire Blvd.: Menus

There is also The Counter for food, and more restaurants on that block like Johnny’s Pizza, Baja Fresh, and Mixt Greens. *Marie Callender’s has closed! To the west on Fairfax is a great Vietnamese place called Pho Saigon Pearl. Drago is in the Petersen Museum across the street.
