Originating on the island of Java in Southeast Asia, batik is a resist-dyeing technique where melted wax is applied to cloth to block the absorption of dye. The resulting patterns range from simple to highly intricate and often carry deep cultural and spiritual meaning for the communities that create them.
Join us for a special showcase organized by heritage practitioner Ratna Cary that explores the process, history and artistry of Indonesian batik. The showcase will continue on Saturday, October 31, with a casual reception and remarks.
