We are pleased to announce, “Twill, Satin, and Damask,” a three-day workshop from May 26-28, 2027 organized and hosted by The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum and the Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center, teaching analytical skills and historical context for this material pertinent to the work of museum curators, academic scholars, and graduate students. The workshop will be held at the museum’s study spaces and The Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center, located in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on May 26-27, 2027, and the Avenir Foundation Conservation and Collections Resource Center in Ashburn, Virginia, on May 28, 2027. The workshop will be led by Karthika Audinet, Academic Coordinator of The Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center, Sumru Belger Krody, Chief Curator | Avenir Foundation Curator, and Eva Labson, General Manager and Head of the Antonio Ratti Textile Study and Storage Center. The program will be held in a mixture of formats, including: illustrated lectures providing an overview of the history and development of twill and satin weaves and damask; group discussions; hands-on practices, and practical exercises in the analysis and documentation of these weave structures, featuring the study of a selection of textiles from The Textile Museum and The Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center Collections. Participants will come away with an understanding of twill and satin weaves and damask in the context of various cultures, traditions, eras, and economic spheres, as well as the methods for analyzing and documenting these weave structures.
