Our Mission

Building a foundation of anti-racism and a culture of care, the mission of the Textile Society of America is to foster an international collective community—diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible—for the exchange and dissemination of knowledges and experiences about textiles worldwide.

Our Focus on Diversity

The Textile Society of America, an international organization, recognizes the profound global reach of textiles. We are committed to developing leadership initiatives, membership, and programming rooted in the plurality of textile histories, producers, and purposes. With an eye toward expanding our voices and audience, we will focus on inclusion of underrepresented groups, and advocacy for robust diversity of our personal and professional viewpoints.

A Note from Our Executive Director: Building Our Community, Together

As I sit down to write this year-end message, I find myself reflecting not just on numbers, but on the human energy those numbers represent. The data tells a powerful story of a community that didn't just grow, but deepened its connections and expanded its reach. A scholar recently wrote that TSA is more than a place for learning; it ...

The Textile Society of America honors the life and The Textile Society of America honors the life and legacy of Lotus Stack, a visionary founding president, curator, and scholar who helped build our community. We announce with sadness the passing of Lotus on November 6, 2025, in Minneapolis, MN.

A foundational leader, former TSA president, and beloved curator, her passion for textiles and belief in education, access, and excellence built enduring connections across our global community.

Her vision lives on through the TSA Founding Presidents Award, which supports excellence in textile scholarship. Established in 2008 to honor her and her fellow founders—Peggy Gilfoy, Milton Sonday, Mattiebelle Gittinger, and Louise W. Mackie—this award supports excellence in textile studies at our symposia.

Visit the link in our bio to read our full tribute and learn how her legacy continues to inspire.
