Please join us for the 2025 Project Threadways Symposium, held April 25-26, 2025, in Florence, Alabama and virtually via Zoom.
This year, our theme is Food, Clothing, and Shelter. Presentations will explore the intersection of art and necessity, connect climate and culture, and share stories of artists, designers, and craftspeople who shape our everyday lives.
Speakers include (all presenting live from Florence): Cathy Bailey of Heath Ceramics Jacqueline Bishop, writer, visual artist, and textile scholar Windy Chien, artist and author of The Year of Knots Blair LM Kelley, Director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill The Kitchen Sisters, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, radio producers and documentarians Liz Lambert, designer and partner in MML Hospitality Jack Sanders, architect and creative director at Design Build Adventure Judith Winfrey of Love Is Love Cooperative Farm.
Now in its sixth year, the annual Project Threadways Symposium brings together scholars, activists, makers, and thinkers to present research, share stories, and encourage dialogue about history, community, and power—all through the lens of fashion and textiles. Presentations, meals, exhibitions, and workshops create a multi-day experience in the Shoals, centered on material culture and making.
About Project Threadways:
Project Threadways is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that records, studies, and interprets history, community, and power through the lens of fashion and textiles. From raw material to finished goods, we seek to understand the impact of textiles on our community, nation, and world. In partnership with Alabama Chanin and The School of Making, we connect people, places, and materials through design, making, and education—with cultural heritage, craft preservation, and creative placemaking at the core of our work.
