Music of the Loom
October 4-26, 2024
Opening reception: October 4, 6-9 PM CDT
“Music of the Loom” is a solo show of Qianwen Yu, it explores the connections between weaving and music, two art forms that share fascinating similarities.
This exhibition presents “Weaving Philip Glass’s Opening” and “Woven Symphony”, works that transform musical compositions into woven textures and fabric patterns into musical scores. “Weaving Philip Glass’s Opening” translates the repetitive melodies of Philip Glass’s Glassworks into a tactile, woven fabric, illustrating the shared texture of music and weaving. “Woven Symphony” transforms weaving drafts into musical compositions, where the patterns of the weaving are translated into a symphony played by different instruments.
Through these works, I aim to create a new sensory experience, where textiles can become a medium for musical composition and music can inspire the design of textile patterns. By translating visual, tactile, and auditory elements into one another, I hope to expand the accessibility of both art forms, making them enjoyable for all, including those with sensory impairments, and revealing the subtle beauty within automated textile techniques. This event is also a part of the Chicago Exhibition Weekend.
The opening reception will be on October 4, from 6-9 pm.
