This exhibition highlights the work of several artists who are dealing with the effects of hate speech in society. They have included work from City Tech-CUNY Professor Nazanin Munroe’s “Talismanic Garments” series, which is about Sufi poetry (Rumi) as a talisman against hate, fashioned into a garment’s psycho-spiritual armor. They also included two digital prints from her series “Collective Unconscious,” which juxtaposes passionate poetry by a female poet (Jahan Malek Khatun) with idealized images of women from 16th century Iran. (The “Collective Unconscious” is a Jungian theory referring to the part of the unconscious mind derived from ancestral memory, a shared human experience).
Professor Munroe’s work was included to broaden the scope of the original curatorial vision to include non-Jewish artists in the consideration of the larger issue.
