The School of Craft + Emerging Media at Alberta University of the Arts invites applications for a permanent faculty position starting August 2020:
Assistant or Associate Professor, Fibre.
The Opportunity

The AUArts Fibre program values the breadth of its curriculum and seeks applicants able to teach to a diversity of approaches within contemporary fibre and textiles. Applicants should possess a range of studio skills relevant to fibre and textiles, as well as knowledge of contemporary craft and design discourse, and a capacity for critical research and innovation. The successful applicant will have significant experience in surface design, sustainable/ethical practices in fashion/textiles, wearable art, indigenous craft, contemporary art, and/or fibre mixed media. Digital design skills are also an asset as is the ability to teach in other curricular areas at AUArts.
Responsibilities
- Provide instruction and prepare curriculum for students in specialty areas of fibre and textiles.
- Prioritize and maintain an active professional research/creation practice;
- Design and deliver contemporary curriculum at all levels of the BFA Fibre and MFA Craft Media programs in relation to curricular need;
- Participate in academic governance including committee work; and
- Contribute to the creative academic administrative leadership of Fibre.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- an MFA, MDes or other graduate degree in a relevant academic discipline;
- demonstrated excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level at all levels for a minimum of two (2) years; experience teaching at the graduate-level is an asset;
- a minimum of two (2) years of scholarly/creative practice outside of post-secondary education, including publishing, exhibition, or other forms of peer-reviewed distribution;
- a strong critical/theoretical knowledge and understanding of contemporary Fibre practice and general knowledge of all aspects of the discipline.
Working closely with colleagues from a diversity of academic and studio disciplines, the new Assistant or Associate Professor in Fibre will become part of a teaching and learning community committed to pedagogical currency and academic excellence.

About the School of Craft + Emerging Media at AUArts
The School of Craft + Emerging Media offers students a rigorous studio education in established and emerging skill sets. We evolve the past, invent the future, and recombine the up-and-coming with the well-established. We offer four-year University degrees (Bachelor of Fine Art) in Ceramics, Fibre, Glass, Jewellery + Metals, and Media Arts. We also have minors in each of these as well as in Object Design + Fabrication. Influenced by objects designed and redesigned to meet humans’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs for millennia, the School of Craft + Emerging Media develops students’ agency with materials and technological processes.
