We are mid-way through our 2024 Symposium, “Shifts and Strands”! It’s been wonderful to connect with textile people around the world and learn about their practices and research. If you haven’t joined us yet, we’ve still got three days of programming to go! Can’t attend live? All sessions are recorded and are available to view for 90 days after the Symposium.

About “Weaving Gallery Conversations”

Over the past year, two Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) staff members – Gaby Lavalle (Tour Specialist), and Lois Taylor Biggs (Rice Curatorial Fellow in Native American Art) – have hosted a range of programs, from public tours to gallery talks to conference presentations, considering or centered on textiles in the museum collection. Reflecting on these programs together, we’ve developed an interest in weaving as a material-based critical and dialogic framework for experiencing artworks and building interpretation with visitors.

At the November 2024 conference, we will present and reflect on the gallery programs we’ve led at the AIC and how weaving-based interpretation might enrich gallery conversations and draw out transformative perspectives on artworks. In this presentation, we will share our experiences forming emergent connections between textile artworks from the AIC collection, contemporary artists, and communities within and beyond Chicago. We will also open a broader, participatory dialogue around weaving and gallery teaching, inviting attendees to share their questions, ideas, and reflections.
