Freelance Contract and Hours
An initial contract is offered at 60 days at £300 per day, worked on average two days per week commencing ASAP from February to the end of September 2025.
Total contract value £18,000 inclusive of ad hoc travel to office for meetings as required. Exclusive of other pre-agreed travel, accommodation and resource fees which will be budgeted for separately.
Location
Remote working with ad hoc attendance at Crafts Council Office and Gallery based on the Pentonville Road in Islington, London and offsite for events and activity as required.
Reporting to
Senior Communications Manager, working closely with the Membership Manager.
About the Brief
The Associate Editor is a freelance position working with the Senior Communications Manager and Crafts Membership Manager to devise, plan and deliver a high-quality editorial plan that is aligned with Crafts member interests.
The Associate Editor will generate original and audience-focused ideas for editorial content and events across media platforms, commissioning freelance writers, photographers and content producers and managing the content budget for maximum impact.
Role Objectives
The Associate Editor (Digital) will:
- Work with the communication team and Crafts Membership Manager to plan and deliver monthly calendar of online editorial content, including writing, editing, fact-checking and proofreading articles; uploading text and images to website in adherence to SEO best practice; drafting and scheduling newsletters; and creating social media posts for all channels
- Take responsibility for distinct areas of work as required, and report on progress to the Senior Communication Manager
- Support the design, delivery & promotion of events and other membership offers, acting as host or moderator as required
- Write occasional articles for the Crafts Council website with appeal beyond the core membership
- Commission diverse voices, including experienced and emerging writers, and ensure timely submission of copy
- Edit and fact-check copy to ensure all output meets Crafts Council editorial standards, undertaking structural edits and rewrites where necessary, and liaising with writers on changes to their work
- Research and obtain appropriate imagery, ensuring compliance with reproduction rights with appropriate credits and captions
- Answer editorial queries, resolve problems and deal with requests from contributors, makers, photographers and other stakeholders
- Contribute to improving administrative systems related to workflow, commissioning, invoicing, and digital content
- Attend meetings and work directly with wider project team to ensure smooth operation of editorial and membership activities
- Work with wider Crafts Council team where required, and respond to queries from colleagues about editorial activities
- Any other editorial and administrative tasks as required by the membership manager, including troubleshooting and resolving any routine or unexpected problem
- Identifying and tracking and meeting key performance indicators
