In the framework of the Future Materials programme, the Jan van Eyck Academie is accepting applications for one Fashion and Textile Material Fellowship and one Future Materials Fellowship both lasting 11 months in Maastricht, the Netherlands, from 15 January to 15 December 2025
Future Materials at the Jan van Eyck Academie aims to support environmentally conscious art and design practices by conducting research and disseminating knowledge on sustainable non-toxic materials. The long-term programme promotes sustainable alternatives to fossil-based or toxic materials commonly used in arts and design with the aim to foster ecologically mindful approaches in these creative fields.
The selected Research Fellows will be invited to embed their enhanced understanding in the development of their material projects with the support of the Future Materials Lab, Material Matters, Food, Printing & Publishing, Photography & Audiovisual, and the Library. Next to the expertise of the external partners, the Fellows can tap into the extended network of the Regio Deal Zuid-Limburg / Circular Economy and Society that clusters research institutes, companies, workshops, and start-ups pioneering in circular and bio-based materials research and production operating in the region. Convening such diverse partners as Zuyd Hogeschool, AMIBM, ARAPAHA, Fibrant, The Sufi Studio, Circular Makers Space Maastricht (CMM), DenimX and T Attelier among others, the programme aims to advance regional capacity building.
The results of these research fellowships will be presented during the Jan van Eyck Open Studios 2025, and the two projects will eventually be included in the Future Materials Bank.
The selected candidates will receive access to a private studio and the expertise of the Labs. The fellows will receive a monthly stipend of 1,750 EUR and a working budget of 2,250 EUR. The application fee is waived for applicants from and living in the Least Developed Countries, Low Income Countries and Lower Middle Income Countries and Territories on the DAC list for ODA recipients.
