Position Description The Department of Theory and History of Art and Design, in collaboration with the Textile Department at the Rhode Island School of Design, is looking for a part-time faculty to teach a course on the Colonial Histories of Modern Textiles in Spring 2023. We are looking for someone who can relate the changing stylistic and cultural significance of textiles with the history of colonialism and slavery, and how it impacted the art, design, and fashion in Europe and the colonies. It is important that the course does not frame colonialism and slavery as just incidental developments, but consider them as the very engine of economic, technological, and geo-political changes shaping textile design. The course should also familiarize the students with the politics of historical and cultural appropriation in contemporary practices. The course would be able to draw on the rich collection of Costume and Textiles collection at the RISD Museum, providing students an opportunity to see and learn from these materials first-hand.
Candidates who have a record of published research and teaching centered on historically under-represented cultural and material production will be prioritized.
This course will be offered every year and the faculty will have a chance to develop it in line with their expertise and the diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at RISD.
Required Qualifications Demonstrated record of scholarship and published research with a focus on the colonial histories of modern textiles.
At least 1 year of teaching relevant courses at the college level.
Department /RISD Description Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is a college of art and design in Providence, Rhode Island with approximately 2,400 graduate and undergraduate students.
