Textiles Trails: Legacies of the Silk Roads in Southeast Asia Symposium / Call for Papers.
November 3 – 6, 2024. Hosted by the International Association for the Study of Silk Road Textiles in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, also known as Laos. This country is home to 50 government-recognized ethnic groups, each with unique weaving and embroidery traditions using cotton, silk, and hemp.
This year’s theme, “Textile Trails: the legacy of silk roads in Southeast Asia,” delves into the cross-influences these ancient trade routes had on the region’s textiles. We invite historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, and independent scholars to submit paper abstracts exploring this theme of “legacy.”
We seek insights into the enduring impacts of trade, movement of materials and people, and the transfer of technology to and from Southeast Asia.
Your paper may focus on various facets of textile production and use, such as:
• Technologies: weaving, embroidery, dyeing
• Cultivations: sericulture, cotton cultivation, cultivation of dye plants
• Motifs: the evolution of patterns, innovation, and abstractions
• Materials: trades of and productions of metal threads, silk fabrics, printed cotton
• Dress: migration of ethnic groups
There will be a post-conference publication. All speakers must be able to submit a full paper by January 15, 2025. Send application materials to Irene Lu at: irenelu_hz@163.com
DEADLINE: May 1, 2024. Accepted proposals will be notified by May 31, 2024.
