Responsibilities
We are seeking a candidate with an independent artistic, theoretical, curatorial, or research-based practice in the field of contemporary art. The position focuses on questions of cultural transmission, social and performative forms of knowledge, politics of memory, public space, and contemporary forms of collective imagination. Applications are explicitly encouraged from individuals working across diverse fields of contemporary art practice and Artistic Research. Curatorial experience may form part of the candidate’s profile but is not a prerequisite. Potential areas of interest include, but are not limited to: Artistic Research and theoretical practice; relational and participatory art practices; cultural memory, tradition, and transmission; performative forms of cultural heritage preservation and critical heritage studies; World-building and speculative futures (including perspectives on climate, biodiversity, and ecological imaginaries); contemporary art and algorithmic cultures / AI; curatorial formats and institutional critique.
Responsibilities include:
- Independently teaching and collaboratively contributing to courses at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level, particularly in the areas of Relational Forms, World Building, and Artistic Production / Exhibiting
- Co-developing theoretical and research-based teaching formats
- Developing independent artistic and/or research-based projects, as well as demonstrating an interest in pursuing a dissertation or doctoral project in the field of artistic research
- Contributing to the institute’s research focus areas and participating in research projects and externally funded research initiatives
- Supporting the development of international collaborations and networks
- Documenting teaching and research activities through publications, exhibitions, and the institute’s website
- Assisting with administrative and organizational tasks
Admission Requirements
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in fine arts, architecture, art history, cultural studies, or a comparable field
Desired Qualification
- Experience in teaching, education, or knowledge mediation
- Experience in writing, publishing, or research management
- An international network within the fields of contemporary art and Artistic Research
- An interest in questions of knowledge production, cultural transmission, and societal transformation
- An interest in pursuing a dissertation or doctoral project in the field of artistic research
- Experience with transcultural and/or interdisciplinary modes of working
- Excellent written and spoken proficiency in German and/or English, enabling the successful candidate to teach in both German and English and to publish research findings internationally
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Willingness to work as part of a team

We offer an annual gross salary of at least € 52,865.40 for a fulltime position. An overpayment based on qualification and experience is possible.

Organisational Unit
The Institute for Contemporary Art (IZK) understands contemporary art as a field of transdisciplinary artistic research at the intersection of art, society, materiality, knowledge, technology, and the public sphere. The Institute’s work focuses on new forms of artistic knowledge production, material- and process-based research, experimental forms of making and exhibiting, as well as contemporary social and ecological issues.
The IZK develops artistic research approaches to embodied knowledge systems, cultural transmission, material intelligence, performative forms of preservation, and the interactions between art, technology, climate, biodiversity, and social transformation.
We are seeking two independent artist-researchers with an interest in artistic research, contemporary art practice, and transdisciplinary methods who will collaboratively develop their work within the framework of the institute’s research priorities.
