The Textile / Sculpture Studio Manager is the primary manager of the studios which support students in the California College of the Arts Textiles Studios. As part of the 3D Studios Management team, the Textiles / Sculpture Studio Manager will also be responsible for the shared supervision and upkeep of the Makers Library tool checkout, Shaklee Wood Shop, Metal Shop, Wax Room, Sculpture Benchroom, and A22 Sculpture Gallery, facilities that serve a range of students from CCA’s Fine Arts programs. Familiarity with a broad range of textiles materials and proficiency in multiple approaches to textiles art and design will be expected, as well as competency in metal and wood fabrication. Expertise with the studios’ tools, materials, and processes while upholding a safe and equitable professional studio culture for a diverse body of students and faculty is necessary.
The Textiles / Sculpture Studio Manager will be responsible for the operating budget of the textiles studio, will supervise a crew of 5+ work study students, and will provide safety and technical expertise for all textiles studio users. They will work closely with the Program Chair and area faculty to ensure that studio operations are aligned with academic goals and needs. As a member of the Studio Operations team, this employee will be actively engaged in creating new collaborative models and building active and accessible cross-disciplinary spaces for the CCA community during the CCA campus unification process.
This is a seasonal 9.5 month position active during the academic year from approximately August 1- May 15, with full benefit coverage for 12 months. They are currently scheduled to work from Monday – Friday 8 am – 4pm during the Fall and Spring academic sessions.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Studio Operations – 35%
- Maintains the safe operation of the looms, screenprinting studio, dye lab, and related equipment; makes repairs and/or arranges for service as needed.
- In collaboration with the Oakland Studio Operations Team, manages
- the operations of the Sculpture Studios to ensure a well-maintained, safe, and friendly environment.
- Works with Studio Operations Team and faculty to maintain
- appropriate inventory of equipment and supplies in studios and to
- purchase and procure course-specific materials.
- Manages storage and handling of hazardous materials; maintains and updates catalog of Safety Data Sheets.
Management & Administration – 30%
- Manages purchasing and procurement of Textiles Studio materials and equipment
- Tracks and records expenses and ensures studio expenditures remain within the allotted annual budget.
- Independently manages a team of 4-8 student workers. Provides supervisory support to Graduate Studio Assistants (GSAs).
- Trains and monitors student workers in studio / shop tasks; provides
professional development opportunities whenever feasible. - Manages studio materials resale and allocation as required.
- Assists the Studio Operations Managers in the planning and execution of the annual budget proposal, including materials, supplies, and equipment requests.
Academic Role/Support – 30%
- Meets regularly with Program Managers and Chairs of stakeholding programs to ensure alignment of activities and facilities with curricular needs and goals.
- Holds all studio users accountable to Studio and College wide policies for safety and access; delivers mandatory studio Safety Orientations and the Textiles Studio Contract; works with Studio Operations team, Chairs, and area faculty to keep these policies and procedures updated, relevant, and coherent.
- Works with the studio community in a culturally-competent manner, consciously creating opportunities for inclusive and equitable access.
- Provides topical orientations and demonstrations to students and faculty for specific tools / techniques / procedures in the Textiles and Sculpture Studios.
- Creates an open and friendly studio environment while promoting and actively communicating the safe, healthy use of materials, processes, and techniques to all members in the Textiles and Sculpture Studios
- Assists in College initiatives for campus planning; coordinates with faculty and leadership in prioritizing institutional needs for the College’s Campus Unification.
Non-Essential Job Function(s) – 5%
- Manages students in distress.
- Offers technical oversight and back-up support for other CCA studios.
- Serves as a member of the College’s Emergency Response Team.
- Performs additional duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibility
This person has direct supervision of 10+ student workers and provides supervisory support to Graduate Student Assistants.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Professional Qualifications
- BFA or equivalent professional experience required.
- 3 years working experience.
- Experience in art, design, and/or architecture education or production preferred.
Administrative & Management Experience
- Confident using independent judgement in decision making.
- Experience collaborating and working in a team setting required.
- Developed organizational and task management skills; strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior experience with creating and managing annual labor and materials budgets in the 20,000+ range.
Specialized Knowledge & Skills
- Strong skills in a broad range of fiber materials and multiple approaches to making textiles art will be expected, particularly weaving, dyeing, screenprinting, soft good construction, and the safe use of dyes and materials.
- Familiarity with metal and wood fabrication, moldmaking and casting desired.
- Some experience with digital fabrication tools and methods preferred.
- Knowledge of and commitment to health, sustainability, and safety as they apply to artistic materials and regulations.
- Familiarity using a variety of software applications including Word and Excel. G Suite and Mac/Apple proficiency. WebCheckout experience preferred.
- Comfortable working with, maintaining, and providing safe instruction in the use of hand and power tools.

Working Conditions
- The Sculpture/Textiles Studio Manager is currently scheduled to work 8am-4pm Monday through Friday.
- This job requires long periods of sitting, standing, or repetitive tasks.
- Noise levels are moderate.
Physical Requirements
- Must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength and coordination.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license and be able to operate a full-sized pickup truck.
- Must have the ability to operate material handling equipment, including pallet jacks and forklifts. Training and certification will be provided.
