Dr. Sharbreon Plummer was our guest speaker for the December 2021 TSA Stitch-In. She shared her journey in textiles and discussed how her great grandmother’s life laid the foundation for an unexpected pathway into research and the celebration of Black women’s work across textile history. Her presentation includes portions from her dissertation, Haptic Memory, as well as two forthcoming public projects.
Dr. Sharbreon Plummer (Baton Rouge, LA) is a facilitator, artist and storyteller with an interest in the intersections of Black life, history and artistic production. Her dissertation, Haptic Memory: Resituating Black Women’s Lived Experiences in Fiber Art Narratives, was awarded the ABARAKA Award by the San Antonio Ethnic Art Society and the Manuel Barkan Dissertation Award by The Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy at Ohio State. Dr. Plummer has been featured as an artist-in-residence at Rogers Art Loft (Las Vegas, NV) and Arquetopia (Forthcoming May 2022). She is the founder of AYA Thought Studio and serves as an Adjunct Professor in the University of Houston’s M.A. in Arts Leadership program.
