Our Mission

Building a foundation of anti-racism and a culture of care, the mission of the Textile Society of America is to foster an international collective community—diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible—for the exchange and dissemination of knowledges and experiences about textiles worldwide.

Our Focus on Diversity

The Textile Society of America, an international organization, recognizes the profound global reach of textiles. We are committed to developing leadership initiatives, membership, and programming rooted in the plurality of textile histories, producers, and purposes. With an eye toward expanding our voices and audience, we will focus on inclusion of underrepresented groups, and advocacy for robust diversity of our personal and professional viewpoints.

Member Monday with Sara Rosenthal

Member Monday with Sara Rosenthal

Multidisciplinary artist, writer, and researcher Sara Rosenthal explores time, transformation, and material memory through weaving, installation, video art, and performance. From handwoven “mold” and tapestries featuring reimagined stone mother figures to deeply personal work responding to the Los Angeles wildfires that destroyed her childhood home, Rosenthal’s textile practice moves between rupture and repair, the microscopic and the cosmic. As co-Director ...

Maria Maea's @maeamaria art practice is informed b Maria Maea's @maeamaria art practice is informed by weaving and gardening, exploring how diaspora and capitalism have "repatterned" the body, and the need to reimagine ancestral practices in contemporary LA. Utilizing assemblage and process-based figurative sculptures, she examines the link between land and body, focusing on immigrant narratives and labor in Los Angeles, extending her research to equitable futures and climate justice.

Her "future ancestor sculptures" use materials like concrete, rebar, found objects, plants, seeds, and woven palm fronds. These works serve as intimate portraits and urban cartography, often containing seed pods designed to crumble, ensuring multi-generational propagation. Maea is a Latinx Artist Fellow (2024-2025) and California Community Fund Fellow (2024-2025). Her work has been widely exhibited, including at the Hammer Museum biennial Made In LA: Acts of Living (2023) and acquired by the Hammer Museum (2024).

🌟🗣️Maria is featured speaker at our Colloquium on April 16. Learn more at the link in our bio or visit textilesocietyofamerica.org

Colloquium is made possible in part by support from the Teitelbaum Family Fund and Latin American Fund.
