Our Mission

Building a foundation of anti-racism and a culture of care, the mission of the Textile Society of America is to foster an international collective community—diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible—for the exchange and dissemination of knowledges and experiences about textiles worldwide.

Our Focus on Diversity

The Textile Society of America, an international organization, recognizes the profound global reach of textiles. We are committed to developing leadership initiatives, membership, and programming rooted in the plurality of textile histories, producers, and purposes. With an eye toward expanding our voices and audience, we will focus on inclusion of underrepresented groups, and advocacy for robust diversity of our personal and professional viewpoints.

🎉 Meet TSA’s 2025 Research Travel Grant recip 🎉 Meet TSA’s 2025 Research Travel Grant recipients! Dr. Nisaphi Lyndem will document Naga textiles in India, while Katarin María Laruelle Aránguiz @l___a___r___k records the last indigo dyer of Chiapas, Mexico. Their projects honor Indigenous knowledge and combat cultural erasure.

🔸 Dr. Nisaphi Lyndem, a Khasi scholar and textile anthropologist, is using her TSA grant to conduct fieldwork in Nagaland, where she will research historical Naga textiles. This research will culminate in a book aimed at reclaiming these narratives and empowering women weavers in Northeast India.📚

🔹 Katarin María Laruelle Aránguiz, a McGill PhD candidate, is documenting the indigo dyeing techniques of Don Francisco Álvarez Montoya, the last practitioner of a 500-year-old tradition in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Mexico.🌿
