Thank you to everyone who joined us at our 2024 Symposium, “Shifts and Strands: Rethinking the Possibilities and Potentials of Textiles”! We enjoyed 6 days of dynamic events: keynote lectures, virtual artist studio visits, panel discussions, and over 60 fascinating presentations by over 100 individual presenters. This was all made possible by over 100 volunteers!
Among many highlights, Wafa Ghnaim’s opening keynote taught us about the rich history of Palestinian dress. We saw Nastassja Swift demonstrate needle felting as part of her studio process, and we heard embroidery artisans in rural India describe their expert training. Dr. Anna Arabindan-Kesson and Dr. Sharbreon Plummer talked about their research exploring textiles as sites of exploited labor and the possibility of repair. Ai Kijima shared the heartbreaking effect of the death of her cat on her work as an artist.
The program included presentations and panels featuring diverse scholars, researchers, artists, curators, and conservators from over 20 countries like the US, Canada, Bahrain, Nigeria, India, Indonesia, Greece, the UK, Romania, Cape Verde, Norway, Estonia, Kenya, Hungary, Australia, Japan, Pakistan, Turkey, and the Palestinian diaspora. Presentation topics and themes include sustainability; indigeneity; valorizing traditional techniques and makers; social entrepreneurship; diversifying exhibition practices; eco-design; small-scale and micro-economies; textiles and healing from trauma; new materials and new technologies; intergenerational skills transmission; conservation practices and ethics; and diasporic textile heritage.
The 2024 Symposium built on TSA’s previous events, creating spaces to challenge dominant discourses, celebrate diverse textile cultures, and promote anti-racism, equity, and accessibility. It highlighted member work and fostered community connections, aligning with TSA’s mission to nurture a global, inclusive, and accessible textile community.
We want to thank you for joining us in this meaningful gathering. Thank you especially to our Symposium Committee and to the dozens of volunteers who gave their time and energy to make the Symposium possible. We could not have done it without you!
Thank you to our Volunteers!
