Since 2017, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, has hosted the Textile Society of America on its Object of the Day blog to celebrate New York Textile Month, held in September each year. TSA members have been invited to write about a textile object in the museum’s collection that aligned with their research and expertise. It has been an exciting way to celebrate both Cooper Hewitt’s collection and the breadth of knowledge within our membership.
This initiative was started by Susan Brown, Associate Curator and Acting Head of Textiles at Cooper Hewitt and former TSA Board Member (2012 – 2016). Over the past three years, the Textile Month collaboration has resulted in 80 published Object of the Day contributions from TSA members, allowing our members to share their knowledge of textile history and technique with the museum’s broader audience. We are greatly appreciative to each member who has taken the time to write one of these posts and to Cooper Hewitt for the continued Textile Month relationship.
Shortly after Textile Month 2019, the museum transitioned from daily to weekly blog posts. In light of this change, we have asked four past TSA Presidents to write for the blog each week during Textile Month 2020. We hope that you will be as excited as we are to follow their upcoming posts that will be published on Cooper Hewitt’s Object of the Week blog each Monday throughout September.

In addition to the upcoming posts for Textile Month 2020, we wanted to take the opportunity this year to celebrate the many contributions from the past.
